The day and after · Honeymoon

How much time between a wedding and a honeymoon?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

There is no set rule, so you can leave the day after or wait months. Many couples go straight away, but others prefer a few weeks to rest, recover and save. The choice is yours, so plan what suits your energy, work and budget.

You can travel the morning after the wedding, or you can wait until your first anniversary. The only real limit is your own life. Some couples book a short break straight after the wedding, then take a longer honeymoon later in the year. That can ease the pressure of planning two big things at once.

Think about your energy too. Weddings are wonderful but tiring, and you may want a few days at home to unpack, open cards and simply breathe. If you have work commitments, check your holiday allowance and any busy periods. If you are having a legal ceremony in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, remember your notice rules and dates, but those do not affect your honeymoon timing.

If you wait, keep the excitement alive by planning one or two small things together, like a tasting menu or a day trip. If you go immediately, make sure your passports, travel insurance and any visas are sorted well before the wedding. Either way, the honeymoon is about the two of you, not a deadline.
