What is a Sikh marriage called?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

A Sikh marriage is called an Anand Karaj, which means 'blissful union'. It is a joyful ceremony that takes place in a Gurdwara, the Sikh place of worship.

An Anand Karaj is the Sikh wedding ceremony, and it is centred on the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture. The couple and their guests gather in a Gurdwara, where the ceremony is led by a granthi, a reader of the holy scripture. The service includes hymns, prayers and the reading of the Laavan, a four-part hymn that describes the stages of love between the soul and the divine. As the hymns are sung, the couple walks around the holy scripture four times, known as the parikrama, with each round representing a deeper commitment.

Because this is a religious ceremony, you should speak to your Gurdwara about their specific customs and timings. The rules can vary between communities, and some Gurdwaras have their own guidance on music, dress and the order of events. If you want your marriage to be legally recognised in England and Wales, a religious ceremony on its own is only binding if it takes place in a building registered for marriages with an authorised person present. Many couples therefore arrange a short civil ceremony at a register office or approved venue first, or alongside the Anand Karaj. Check GOV.UK, the register office or your place of worship for the current rules.

Guests are welcome to attend regardless of faith. It is customary to cover your head in the Gurdwara and to remove your shoes before entering the main hall. You may also wish to contribute to the langar, the free community meal that follows the ceremony.
