Can a Sikh wedding be held on any day of the week in the UK?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A Sikh wedding can be held on any day of the week, but many couples choose auspicious dates and times instead. You should check with your priest and venue about availability.

There is no rule in Sikhism that bans weddings on any particular day of the week. You are free to marry on a Monday, Friday or any other day if you wish. Many couples, however, ask their priest to select an auspicious date and time, called a muhurat, based on the couple's horoscopes. This is a personal choice and not a requirement.

Practical availability matters a lot too. Some gurdwaras and venues are busiest on Saturdays and Sundays, so weekday dates can be easier to book. If you want a specific date, ask your priest and venue as early as possible.

If you also want your marriage to be legally recognised in England and Wales, remember that a Sikh ceremony alone is only legal if it takes place in a building registered for marriages with an authorised person present. Many couples hold a Sikh ceremony and then complete a short civil ceremony at a register office or approved venue. Check GOV.UK, the register office or your place of worship for the current rules, as they can change.
