Can you do a nikah twice?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

You cannot do a nikah twice to the same person while still married to them. A second nikah would only be valid after the first marriage has ended.

If you are already married, you cannot marry the same person again unless the first marriage has been properly ended. This applies whether you want to renew your vows or repeat the ceremony. Doing a second nikah without ending the first would not be valid.

If you wish to celebrate your marriage again, you can hold a renewal ceremony. This is not a new marriage but a way to mark your commitment. Many couples choose to do this for a special anniversary or after a long separation.

If your marriage has ended, you are free to marry again, including a nikah, once the previous marriage is legally and religiously concluded. The rules for ending a marriage can vary, so speak with your imam and check GOV.UK or your register office for the legal side. If you are unsure about your situation, a local place of worship can advise you on the religious process.
