Can a Church of England wedding include elements from another faith?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A Church of England wedding follows Anglican worship and cannot include hymns, prayers or readings from another faith. You can still share cultural customs outside the service.

The Church of England has its own order of service and standards. Religious content such as hymns, prayers or religious readings from another faith are not allowed inside the ceremony. This applies to civil ceremonies too, which cannot include religious content at all.

You can still welcome your families and culture in other ways. Think about what you can do before or after the service. For example:

  • Wear traditional dress for the photographs or the reception.
  • Share a cultural meal or tea at the wedding breakfast.
  • Include family members in the processional or a unity ritual at the reception.
  • Ask guests to bring a small token or blessing card.

Some parishes may offer guidance on what is possible. The rules can vary by parish, so speak to the vicar early. They will tell you what fits within the service and where you can add your own touches. This keeps the ceremony respectful to both families while staying within church rules.
