Short answer
Good book passages include vows, poems and prose about love from authors such as Kahlil Gibran, E.E. Cummings, Maya Angelou and Jane Austen. Choose words that match your relationship and your ceremony rules.
Book passages work well because they let you share someone else's words with your own meaning. Start by picking a theme that fits your story, such as commitment, friendship, home or growing together. Keep it short enough that everyone stays engaged. Two to three minutes is usually right.
Here are some ideas to consider:
- Kahlil Gibran's 'On Marriage' for a thoughtful look at partnership.
- E.E. Cummings's 'I carry your heart' for something tender and personal.
- Maya Angelou's 'Still I Rise' or her love poems if you want strength and joy.
- A line from Jane Austen or Charlotte Brontë for a classic, gentle tone.
- A passage from your favourite novel that reminds you of each other.
Check your ceremony rules first. Civil ceremonies in England and Wales cannot include religious content such as hymns or prayers, but poems and non-religious readings are fine if the registrar agrees. Religious buildings may have their own guidance, and other UK nations or belief celebrants can allow different content. If you are unsure, ask the registrar or your place of worship early so the wording is approved.
Read the passage aloud a few times and time it. Ask a trusted friend to listen and tell you whether it sounds natural. You can hand a copy to a reader, or print it in the order of service so guests can follow along.
