How long is a church wedding ceremony?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

A typical church wedding ceremony lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. The exact length depends on the denomination, the number of hymns, readings and prayers, and whether you add a full mass or communion. Ask your officiant for their usual timing.

Most Church of England, Church in Wales and Church of Scotland weddings take around 30 to 40 minutes. A Catholic wedding with a full mass can last 45 to 60 minutes, while a shorter Catholic ceremony without mass may be closer to 30 minutes. Other denominations, such as Baptist, Methodist or Orthodox, each have their own traditions, so timings vary.

The service usually includes a welcome, readings, hymns, the exchange of vows and rings, and a blessing. If you choose extra readings, more hymns, or a longer sermon, the service will be longer. If you want a shorter service, talk to your officiant. They can often trim the number of hymns or choose shorter readings.

It is a good idea to tell your guests the expected length in advance, especially if they are elderly or have young children. Also remember that the ceremony is only part of the day. Arrival, seating, and the register signing all add time. Plan for at least an hour from the moment guests arrive until the moment you walk back down the aisle.
