Short answer
You should pay for the things that matter most to you, like your outfits, rings, registrar fees, and your own guests' food and drink. Anything a parent offers to cover is a gift, not an obligation.
There is no fixed rule for who pays for what in a UK wedding. The old tradition that the bride's family pays is no longer expected. Most couples now cover the core costs themselves, especially if the wedding reflects their own taste and budget.
Start by listing everything you need: venue, catering, registrar or celebrant fees, rings, outfits, flowers, photography, music, and stationery. Decide which items are essential to you and which you could trim. Pay for those yourself if you can.
If parents or relatives offer to help, treat their contribution as a gift. You are not obliged to accept it, and you should never plan around money that has not been confirmed. If you do accept, agree clearly what it covers and what happens if plans change.
A good approach is to have an honest conversation early. Say what you plan to pay for, and ask if anyone would like to contribute. That way, there are no surprises later. You stay in control of your decisions, and any help is a bonus, not a condition.
