How many times can a wedding dress be altered?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

A wedding dress can be altered multiple times, but each alteration weakens the fabric and seams. Most dresses can handle two or three rounds of changes, especially if they are simple. Major alterations more than once are risky, and some fabrics cannot be altered at all.

There is no fixed limit, but the practical answer is that a dress can be altered as many times as the fabric and construction allow. Simple changes like hemming or taking in the sides can be done more than once, as long as there is enough seam allowance. However, every time you cut or sew, you remove fabric and stress the material. After two or three significant alterations, the dress may start to lose its shape or show visible marks.

Some fabrics, like delicate lace, beaded netting, or certain silks, are harder to alter repeatedly. The seams may not have enough extra fabric to let out, and taking in too much can distort the pattern. Also, if the dress has intricate embroidery or appliqués, moving them is difficult and may not be possible more than once.

If you are planning to alter a dress for multiple events, such as a ceremony and a reception, that is usually fine because those are different outfits or separate changes. But if you are thinking of resizing the same dress for different people, that is rarely a good idea. Each person's body is different, and the dress will not survive many major changes.

The best approach is to have one professional seamstress do all the alterations, so they know the dress's history and can advise when it has reached its limit. If you need a second alteration later, ask them to check the seams and fabric first.
