Can you back out after paying a deposit?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Yes, you can back out, but you will usually lose your deposit. You are not legally forced to go ahead, but the supplier can keep the deposit and may also charge you for any further costs you agreed to in the contract. Check your terms.

You are never forced to marry a supplier. You can cancel at any time, but the financial consequences depend on your contract. Most wedding contracts say that if you cancel, the deposit is forfeited, and some also say you owe a cancellation fee or the full balance if you cancel late.

Read your contract carefully. Look for the cancellation clause. It should state how much notice you need to give and what you owe at each stage. If the contract is silent, the supplier can only claim their actual losses, which is usually the deposit.

If you are backing out because the supplier has not done what they promised, that is a breach of contract. You may be able to cancel and get your deposit back, but you should put your concerns in writing and give them a chance to fix the issue first.

If you are backing out for personal reasons, tell the supplier as soon as possible. They may be able to rebook your date and offer you a partial refund or a credit. It is not guaranteed, but early notice gives you the best chance.
