Can I get a wedding photographer deposit refunded if I cancel?

Wedding photographer deposits are usually non-refundable, but that is not automatic. It depends on the terms you agreed. Most photographers take a deposit to secure your date and turn away other work. If you cancel, they lose that potential income. If they can rebook your date with another client, they may only be entitled to keep a small admin fee. If they cannot rebook, they may keep the full deposit.

Read your contract carefully. It should state the cancellation policy. If it says the deposit is non-refundable, that is likely enforceable as long as it is a fair reflection of the photographer's loss. However, if the clause is unfair, for example it says you lose everything even if they rebook, you can challenge it under the Consumer Rights Act.

If you cancel, do it in writing as soon as possible. Be honest and polite. Ask if they have any alternative dates or if they can offer a partial refund if they find another booking. Some photographers may offer to move your deposit to a different service, like an engagement shoot, but that is their choice.

If they refuse and you believe you are entitled to a refund, you can escalate. Contact your card provider if you paid by card. Otherwise, consider mediation or small claims. Keep all communication records.
