How do I tie a wedding dress bow?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Fold the sash in half to find the centre, then tie a classic bow at your waist or lower back. Loop the left ribbon over the right, pull through, and adjust the loops and tails so they hang evenly.

Start by pressing the sash or belt so it lies flat. Find the centre point and place it at the front or back of your waist, depending on the dress design. Wrap the two ends around to the back (or front if that is the style) and cross them.

Tie a standard bow: take the right ribbon over the left, then under and through, just like tying shoelaces. Make one loop with each ribbon, cross them, and pull one loop through the other. Gently tighten, then fluff the loops and straighten the tails. For a softer look, leave the loops loose and let the tails hang naturally.

If the sash is very long, you can tie a double bow or let the tails trail down the skirt. For a modern finish, try a single knot with the tails hanging straight. Practise once at home so you know the length and position before the day. Ask your bridal party or a trusted friend to help if the bow is at the back and hard to see in a mirror.
