What is the strongest metal for wedding rings?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For grooms

Short answer

Tungsten carbide is the strongest metal commonly used for wedding rings. It resists scratching and keeps its shape, but it cannot be resized and will shatter under extreme force. Cobalt and titanium are also very strong, though titanium is harder to remove in an emergency.

If strength is your priority, tungsten carbide is the toughest metal you will find in a wedding ring. It is highly scratch resistant and holds a polished finish for years. The trade-off is that it cannot be resized, so your finger size must be exactly right, and if it takes a hard knock it can crack or shatter rather than bend. Cobalt chrome is nearly as strong, is lighter, and can be resized, which makes it a practical alternative. Titanium is also very strong and lightweight, but some jewellers are reluctant to cut it off in an emergency, so always mention it to your insurer or doctor if relevant. Platinum is not the hardest metal, but it is dense and durable, and it wears away slowly rather than breaking. Gold alloys, even 18 carat, are softer and will show scratches over time. Think about your daily life. If you work with your hands or play contact sports, a harder metal will last longer. If you prefer a ring that can be adjusted later, choose a softer metal that a jeweller can resize.
