What is too flashy for a wedding guest?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Too flashy means anything that draws attention away from the couple, such as a white or ivory outfit, an overly revealing dress, or accessories that catch the flash of every camera.

The purpose of a wedding guest outfit is to support the couple, not to become the centre of attention. Avoid anything that could distract from the ceremony or the photos.

A white, cream or ivory dress is the clearest no-go. Even a dress with heavy white embroidery can read as bridal in photographs. Similarly, avoid a full-length ball gown if the couple is having a relaxed wedding.

Overly revealing clothing can also feel out of place. Check the venue and the couple's expectations before choosing something very short or very low-cut. A church or a traditional hall may call for more coverage.

Extremely glittery or sequinned outfits can reflect camera flash and look loud in pictures. If you love sparkle, choose a small detail rather than an all-over glitter dress. Avoid anything with a train, a veil or a tiara, as these are reserved for the bridal party.

When in doubt, aim for polished and respectful. Your presence and support matter more than your outfit.
