Do bridesmaid dresses have built in bras?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Some do, but most do not. Built in bras are more common in structured or strapless styles, while many dresses are designed to be worn with your own bra or with sewn in cups added by a seamstress.

It really depends on the dress. High street and budget friendly dresses rarely have built in support, so you will usually need to plan your own underwear. More structured dresses, especially those with boning or a fitted bodice, may have sewn in cups or a built in shelf bra. If a dress has a low back, a plunge neckline or thin straps, a normal bra will not work. In that case, many bridesmaids use stick on cups, a backless bra, or have a seamstress sew cups into the dress. That is a small alteration that can make a huge difference to comfort and confidence. When you are choosing dresses, ask the shop or designer whether the style has any built in support. If not, budget for alterations or buy good quality adhesive or low back bras. Remember that every body is different, so what works for one bridesmaid may not work for another. Encourage your bridal party to try the dress with the underwear they plan to wear on the day, so there are no surprises.
