What time to invite evening guests to a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Invite evening guests for around 7pm, or about an hour before you plan to serve the evening food. This gives them time to arrive, find their seat and settle in before the party starts.

Evening guests usually join after the wedding breakfast and speeches, so aim for a time that lets them walk straight into the fun. A common choice is 7pm, but think about your own timeline. If your evening buffet is at 7.30pm, invite guests for 7pm so they can get a drink and a welcome. If you have a band or DJ starting at 8pm, 7.30pm might work better.

Put the time clearly on the evening invitation, along with the venue address and any parking or taxi details. Let them know if the ceremony and daytime events are private, so they understand why they are joining later. It is also kind to say what food will be served, for example a buffet or pizza, so they know what to expect.

If you have evening guests who are travelling far, consider giving them a slightly earlier time so they are not rushing. You can also mention whether the bar is open or if there is a toast. The main thing is to be clear and consistent, so everyone knows exactly when to arrive and what happens next.
