How long before a party do you send out invitations?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Send party invitations two to four weeks before the event. This gives guests enough time to reply without forgetting. For a more formal party, allow six weeks. For a casual get-together, two weeks is fine.

For most parties, two to four weeks is the sweet spot. Guests need time to check diaries, arrange childcare or travel, and reply, but not so long that they lose the invitation or forget to respond. If your party is formal, such as a milestone birthday or an anniversary dinner, send invitations six weeks ahead. If it is a relaxed gathering, two weeks works well.

Think about your own planning too. You need final numbers for catering, seating and drinks, so set your RSVP date about a week before you actually need the numbers. That gives you a buffer for chasing late replies.

For parties that fall near busy periods, such as Christmas, bank holidays or school holidays, send invitations a little earlier. People book travel and family time well in advance. A gentle reminder by text or phone a few days before the party is always kind, especially for those who have not replied.
