How do you word wedding invitations when the couple is hosting?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Use a simple, modern format: [Partner A] and [Partner B] invite you to celebrate their marriage on [date] at [time] at [venue]. You can add: Together with their families, if you want to acknowledge parents without naming them.

When you are hosting your own wedding, you can write the invitation in your own voice. A common wording is: Emma Jones and James Brown invite you to celebrate their marriage on Saturday 14 June 2026 at 2pm at The Old Barn, Kent. Or: Together with their families, Emma and James request the pleasure of your company at their wedding.

You can also be more playful: We're getting married! Join us for the ceremony and party on [date] at [time] at [venue]. If you are having a humanist or non-religious ceremony, you can say: Please join us as we exchange vows. For a same-sex couple, simply write both names in the order you prefer.

Include the same practical details: date, time, venue address, and a reception line. You might add: No gifts, please, or: Your presence is the only present we need, if that is your preference. If you have a wedding website, put the address on a separate card. Remember that if you are having a civil ceremony, the registrar must approve any wording on the order of service, but the invitation itself is yours to phrase as you like. Keep it warm and clear, and let your personalities shine through.
