What is the best height for a backdrop?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

The best height for a backdrop is usually 8 feet, which works for most photos and standing guests. For a seated head table, 6 to 7 feet is fine, but for a photo booth, go taller, around 8 to 9 feet.

Think about who will be in front of the backdrop. For a photo booth, guests stand, so the backdrop should be at least 8 feet tall to cover the full body and a bit of headroom. If you have a step and repeat style, 8 feet is standard. For a ceremony backdrop behind a couple, 8 feet frames them well without overwhelming the space. If the backdrop is behind a head table where people sit, 6 to 7 feet is enough, because seated guests are shorter. For a standing sweetheart table, go back to 8 feet. Also consider the width of the room and the ceiling height. In a marquee with a low ceiling, a 9-foot backdrop may look cramped, so measure the space first. If you are using a backdrop stand, check the maximum height it supports, as many go to 8 or 10 feet. For outdoor weddings, wind can catch tall fabric, so a shorter backdrop or weighted base helps. Finally, think about the camera angle. If the photographer shoots from a low angle, a taller backdrop prevents the top edge from showing. A good rule is to make the backdrop taller than the tallest person who will stand in front of it, plus a foot of margin.
