How long does a wedding getting ready take?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For brides

Short answer

Getting ready usually takes two to three hours for hair, make-up and dressing. Some couples allow four hours when there are many people. Build in extra time for photos, snacks and calm. A relaxed morning is better than a rushed one.

Most couples plan two to three hours for the getting ready part of the morning. That covers hair, make-up, dressing and a few minutes to breathe before you leave. If you have a large bridal party, or if hair and make-up artists are working on several people, allow closer to four hours. You will also want time for photographs, so check with your photographer about when they arrive. It is wise to add a buffer of 30 minutes on top of your estimate. Traffic, a button that will not do up, or a late delivery can all happen. Agree a schedule the night before and share it with everyone helping you. Write down the time each person needs to be ready, and the time you need to leave for the ceremony. That way no one is guessing. Remember to eat something, even if you feel nervous. A light breakfast and some water will keep you steady. If you are having a first look or a private moment with your partner, factor that in too. The goal is to feel ready and calm, not to rush out of the door.
