Short answer
The terms mean the same thing in practice. Interfaith describes a relationship between people of different faiths, while interreligious is a slightly more formal word for the same situation.
You will hear both words used to describe a partnership where each person follows a different religion or belief. In everyday UK wedding planning they are interchangeable, and most families and venues will understand either one.
Interfaith is the term most commonly used in the UK. It covers couples where one partner is Christian and the other is Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist or another faith, as well as couples where one is religious and the other is not. Interreligious tends to appear in more formal or academic writing, but it points to the same thing.
The practical side matters more than the label. Your choices will depend on which traditions you want to honour, what your families expect and what the law allows in your area. For example:
- A religious ceremony in a registered building may be possible for both partners if the venue and officiant agree.
- A civil ceremony cannot include religious content, so hymns, prayers or religious readings are usually not allowed.
- In England and Wales a humanist ceremony is not legally binding on its own, so you may need a separate civil registration.
- Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules, and humanist weddings can be legally binding in some parts.
Speak early with both places of worship, and check GOV.UK or the register office for the current legal position. Some couples choose two ceremonies, one for each community, or blend traditions in a way that feels right for you.
