Short answer
The couple and guests usually wear traditional South Asian clothing in bright colours, with the bride often in red or another auspicious shade. Guests should avoid white and black and follow any dress code on the invitation.
The bride typically wears a heavily embroidered lehenga, saree or gown, often in red, maroon, gold or another auspicious colour. She may wear a dupatta over her head during parts of the ceremony and will often have jewellery such as a maang tikka, necklace, bangles and jhumkas. The groom usually wears a sherwani, kurta or sherwani-style suit with a turban or sehra, often in matching or contrasting colours.
Guests generally wear festive South Asian outfits such as sarees, lehengas, salwar kameez or sherwanis, or smart Western suits and dresses. Bright colours and rich fabrics are welcome. White is usually avoided because it is associated with mourning in some traditions, and black is often avoided too. If the invitation specifies a dress code, follow it.
Comfort matters, especially for long ceremonies, dancing and outdoor events. Choose footwear you can stand and dance in, and consider a light shawl if the venue is cool. Families may ask guests to remove shoes before entering the mandap or prayer area, so wear shoes that are easy to take off.
If you want the marriage legally recognised, remember that a civil ceremony may be needed alongside the religious rites. Check GOV.UK, your register office or your place of worship for the current rules.
