Short answer
Indian weddings usually include a series of pre-wedding ceremonies, the main wedding day, and post-wedding events, each with its own rituals and meaning.
Indian weddings are rarely a single day. They often span several days, with different ceremonies for different families and friends. The exact events vary by region, community and family tradition, so always check with the couple for your specific schedule.
Common pre-wedding events include a sangeet, a night of music and dance, and a mehndi ceremony where henna is applied to the bride's hands and feet. There may also be a haldi ceremony, where a turmeric paste is applied to the couple for a glowing complexion. Some families hold a roka or chunni ceremony, which is an informal engagement blessing.
The main wedding day typically includes the baraat, a procession of the groom arriving on horseback or in a decorated vehicle. The couple may exchange garlands in a jaimala ceremony, perform rituals around a sacred fire, and take seven steps together. The bride then leaves her family home in the Vidaai, a tearful farewell.
Post-wedding events often include the reception, where guests celebrate with food and dancing, and the next day may bring a post-wedding brunch or the couple's departure. Each event has its own dress code and timing. If you are unsure about what to expect or how to behave, ask the couple or a member of the bridal party.
If you are attending a UK legal ceremony as well, remember that civil ceremonies cannot include religious content. Religious ceremonies are only legally binding in registered buildings with an authorised person present. Check GOV.UK, the register office or your place of worship for current rules.
