Short answer
Keep church decoration simple, respectful and reversible so it does not damage the building or clash with its rules. Work closely with the church and your celebrant before choosing anything.
Start by asking the church what they allow. Many historic buildings have strict rules about nails, tape, open flames and anything that might touch stone, wood or stained glass. Some churches provide flowers or have a list of approved suppliers, so check that first. This saves you time and avoids awkward last-minute changes.
Flowers are the most common choice. A small arrangement on the communion table, a few blooms on the lectern and trailing greenery along the aisle often look elegant without overwhelming the space. Choose seasonal blooms to keep costs down and the scent light, since strong fragrances can bother guests.
Lighting can transform a dark nave. Battery-operated candles on the pews or in lanterns add warmth without fire risk, but confirm they are permitted. Some churches allow soft fairy lights; others do not.
Consider what your guests will see. Decor should guide the eye toward the couple and the focal point of the service, not compete with it. Keep the back of the church clear so everyone can see and hear.
If you want something personal, a single banner, a meaningful poem on a card or a small display of family heirlooms can carry sentiment without needing permission for permanent fixtures.
