Do best man and maid of honor walk together?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

They can, but it is not required. Many couples have them walk together, while others have them enter separately with the rest of the bridal party.

This is a matter of style, not law. In a traditional church order, the bridal party often enters in pairs, and the best man and maid of honour may walk together as the final pair before the bride. Some couples prefer the maid of honour to walk with the best man, while others have them enter with their own groups.

If you have a large party, pairing people up helps the procession flow smoothly. You might pair the best man with the maid of honour, or match other members by height or relationship. For smaller parties, everyone can walk alone or in natural pairs.

In Scotland and Northern Ireland, celebrants often allow more flexible arrangements, and humanist ceremonies can be personalised. For civil ceremonies in England and Wales, the registrar may suggest an order that suits the room. Ask your officiant or venue about space and sightlines, and write the final order in your order of service so everyone knows where to stand.
