Short answer
A typical UK wedding budget splits into venue and catering, then clothing, photography, flowers, music, stationery, and smaller extras. Your own split depends on your priorities, guest list and location. There is no standard amount, only what you decide to spend together.
Start by agreeing your total budget with your partner and anyone else contributing. Then list every item you need, from the venue and food to the rings, outfits, hair and makeup, invitations, flowers, photographer, music, and thank-you cards. Most couples find that the venue and catering take the largest share, often around half of the total, because they cover the room, tables, chairs, and the meal. Next come the bigger visible items like photography, clothing, and flowers. Smaller costs, such as stationery, favours, transport, and wedding insurance, can add up quickly, so leave a buffer of about ten percent for surprises. Remember that legal fees are separate: in England and Wales you pay for giving notice and the registrar's attendance, and in Scotland and Northern Ireland there are notice fees too. Check the current fees with your local register office or GOV.UK, as they change. If you are having a religious ceremony, ask your place of worship about any fees or donations. A useful way to build your breakdown is to rank what matters most to you as a couple, then put your money there first. Cut back on things you care less about, not on the legal essentials. Keep your guest list realistic, because every extra guest raises your catering and seating costs. Review your breakdown together every few weeks, and adjust before you book anything non-refundable.
