Is it worth renting a suit for a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For grooms

Short answer

Renting is worth it when you want a special style you would not normally wear, when you need a good fit without alterations, or when you want to keep costs low for a single event. It is less useful if you plan to wear the suit often.

Hiring gives you access to styles you might not buy, such as a classic morning suit, a frock coat or a designer tuxedo. This is helpful if you want something formal without investing in a wardrobe piece you will rarely use. Many hire shops also offer alterations as part of the package, so the suit can be adjusted to fit you well.

Hiring is convenient because you do not need to store the suit at home afterward. There is no worry about moths, damp or whether it will still be in fashion in a few years. You simply return it on time and avoid any long-term maintenance.

The downside is that you cannot keep the memories attached to the outfit, and hire stock may not be exactly your size or colour. Some hire shops have limited ranges, so book early to secure your choice. Always check what is included, such as shoes, braces, ties and cleaning.

If you value variety over ownership, or if your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event for you, hiring is often the sensible choice. If you already own a smart suit you love, buying a new one may not be necessary.
