What is a wedding seating plan for long tables?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

A long table plan seats guests along one or more long tables, usually with the top table at one end, and works well for a communal, party-style meal.

Long tables encourage conversation across the room and suit barns, marquee and rustic venues. Decide how many guests each table holds by measuring the table and allowing space for chairs and place settings. A good rule is about 60 to 70 centimetres per guest, but check with your venue.

Place the top table at one end so the couple and bridal party face the room. Seat the parents and grandparents close to the top table, then mix friends and family along the length. Alternate men and women if you like a traditional look, but mixing groups is often friendlier.

Consider the flow of service. Staff need room to pass plates, so leave space at the ends of the table. Decorate the table with runners, candles and flowers that do not block views. If some guests are elderly or have limited mobility, seat them where they can get to their seat easily and where staff can help.
