Short answer
Organise your seating chart by grouping guests into natural clusters, like family, friends, and colleagues. Then assign tables based on who would enjoy each other's company, and keep couples and close groups together.
Start by making a list of all your guests and grouping them into categories: immediate family, extended family, school friends, work friends, neighbours, and so on. Then think about who already knows each other and who might get along. You do not need to split couples or families, unless they have asked to be apart. For each table, aim for a mix of people who have something in common, but avoid putting too many strangers together. A good rule is to seat people with at least one person they already know, so no one feels isolated. Consider any special needs: elderly guests may need seats near the dance floor or toilets, and guests with young children may prefer to be near an exit. If you have guests who do not know many people, place them with your most sociable friends. You can also use a seating chart board at the entrance, listing table numbers and names, so guests can find their table easily. For the top table, decide whether you want a traditional setup or something more modern. Remember that your seating chart is not permanent, so you can adjust it right up until the day. Ask your venue for table sizes and shapes first, then match your groups to the tables.
