How much should you spend on a gift?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

There is no fixed amount. Spend what you can comfortably afford, and let your relationship with the couple guide you. A thoughtful gift from the heart matters more than the price tag, and guests on tight budgets are always welcome to give less.

Wedding gift spending is personal, and there is no rule that applies to everyone. In the UK, guests often spend somewhere between what they would spend on a nice dinner and what they would spend on a weekend away, but that range varies hugely depending on your finances and your closeness to the couple. Close family and bridal party members often give more, while casual friends or colleagues give less.

The most important thing is to give within your means. No couple wants you to struggle financially because of their wedding. If you are travelling far, staying in a hotel, or paying for an outfit, factor those costs into your overall budget. A smaller gift is perfectly acceptable when you have already spent money to attend.

If you are unsure, give what feels right for your relationship. A handmade gift, a heartfelt card, or a contribution to a honeymoon fund can be just as appreciated as an expensive item from a list. The couple invited you because they want you there, not because of what you bring. Focus on the sentiment, not the sum.
