How big should a bridal bouquet be?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

A bridal bouquet should be in proportion to your height and dress, usually around 25 to 35 centimetres across. If you are petite, go smaller; if you are tall or wearing a fuller dress, a larger bouquet balances you better.

The right size depends on your frame, your dress and how you plan to hold it. A good rule is that the bouquet should not hide your waist or your dress details. Hold it at hip level and look in a mirror: you want it to sit comfortably without covering your hands or your outfit's best features.

For most brides, a round bouquet about the width of your shoulders looks balanced. A trailing or cascading bouquet can be longer, but keep the total length from your hands to the tips of the flowers in proportion to your height. If you are under 5 foot 4, a smaller posy or a single-stem bouquet often works better.

Consider the weight too. A heavy bouquet can tire your arms during photos and the ceremony. Ask your florist to use lighter stems and a comfortable handle, and practise holding it for a few minutes at home.

Your dress style matters as well. A simple sheath dress can take a bold, structured bouquet, while a very detailed gown might need a smaller, simpler bunch. If you are unsure, ask your florist to show you two sizes at your trial so you can compare in front of a mirror.
