What are the traditional wedding customs in Cuba?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests · For parents

Short answer

Cuban weddings often blend Catholic and Afro-Cuban traditions, with music, dancing and family rituals at the heart of the day. Couples may include customs like the arras coins, lasso and veil.

Cuban wedding traditions often mix Catholic ceremony with Afro-Cuban and family customs, especially in religious and cultural celebrations. You might see the arras, a set of thirteen coins handed over by the groom to the bride as a symbol of shared provision. The lasso, a decorative rope or rosary looped around the couple's shoulders, represents their unity. Some couples also exchange veils, rings and gifts of flowers or fruit.

Music and dance are central. A live band or DJ often plays salsa, son and rumba, and the reception can go on late into the night. Guests are encouraged to join in, and the first dance may be followed by open dancing for everyone. Food is generous and festive, with dishes such as ropa vieja, tostones and flan.

Family plays a large role. Godparents, known as padrinos, often sponsor parts of the wedding and give gifts. Children may carry rings or sprinkle petals. If you are planning a UK ceremony, remember that any religious content must follow the rules for your chosen venue, and a civil ceremony in England and Wales cannot include religious readings or hymns. Check with your register office or place of worship for what is allowed.

Many couples choose to hold a religious ceremony followed by a civil one, or a humanist ceremony alongside a legal registration, to honour both tradition and the law.
