What are the traditional customs and rituals at a Caribbean wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests · For parents

Short answer

Caribbean weddings often include a jumping the broom, a unity ritual, and lively music and dancing. Customs vary by island, family and faith, so ask your family what matters most to you.

Caribbean weddings bring together music, food, dance and family traditions from many islands. Many couples honour their roots by weaving these into a UK ceremony or a separate celebration.

A well known ritual is jumping the broom. It marks the couple's new life together and has deep meaning for some families. Others choose a unity ceremony, such as planting a tree, mixing sands or lighting a single candle. Some couples also include a money dance, where guests pin notes or place money on the couple while they dance.

Music is central. Calypso, soca, reggae, dancehall and steel pan often fill the room. Guests are usually encouraged to dance rather than sit quietly. Food is another highlight. You might serve jerk chicken, rice and peas, curry goat, fried fish, callaloo or a tropical fruit salad. Desserts can include rum cake or black cake.

Dress can be bright and breezy. Some brides choose a white dress with a colourful sash or headwrap. Grooms may wear linen suits or traditional Caribbean attire. Children and grandparents often join in the dancing.

If you want a legally binding wedding in the UK, you still need to follow the rules for England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Religious or cultural ceremonies alone may not be legal. Check GOV.UK, the register office or your place of worship for what you need.
