Do you walk down the aisle at a registry office?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

At a register office you can walk down the aisle if the room layout allows it, but it is not a legal requirement and many couples simply stand together at the front.

A register office ceremony is usually held in a small room with chairs set out in rows or a semi-circle. You and your partner may enter together, or one of you can walk in while the other waits at the front. The registrar will guide you on the day and will often ask you to stand side by side at the table where you sign the marriage schedule. There is no legal need for an aisle, a processional song or any formal entrance, so you can arrange the moment to suit your style.

  • Check the room layout when you book your slot.
  • Bring your own music if you want a processional.
  • Tell the registrar in advance how you plan to enter.

If you would like a traditional walk but the room is too small, consider holding a blessing or reception later at a larger venue.
